Pharmacy Technician - Health Science Associate
The Ultimate Medical Academy Pharmacy Technician Health Science Associate degree program can have you ready to pursue a career in the growing pharmaceutical industry in 15 months. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of pharmacy technicians is expected to increase by 31 percent from 2008 to 2018, which is much faster than the average for all occupations.
Pharmacy Technicians help people get the medicine they need
As insurance costs continue to rise, the demand for pharmacists to become more involved in patient care will be likely. As a result, pharmacy technicians will continue to see an expansion of their role in the pharmacy. In addition to a complementary curriculum of general education and elective courses, Pharmacy Technology students will learn the skills they need to perform key pharmacy tasks, such as:
- Receive and process prescription requests
- Count, weigh, pour and mix medications
- Ensure accurate labeling
- Process insurance claims and billing
- Maintain patient profiles
- Maintain written or computerized patient medication records
Pharmacy Technicians often work in retail pharmacies, mail-order pharmacies, hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
An externship course is required as part of this program to gain hands-on experience. The last course in your program provides you an opportunity to gain the practical experience you need to be successful. UMA works with employers to find suitable sites, and students are asked to submit information to UMA about pharmacies near their location. The externship experience is 180 hours in length on a schedule agreed upon by all parties.
Upon graduation, you’ll receive a diploma and be eligible for registration as a pharmacy technician. UMA offers additional test preparation classes that prepare students to sit for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) offered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). Technicians who pass the PTCE are granted the title of Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT).
Following completion of your externship, UMA’s Career Services will work with you to find job opportunities that fit your skills and goals, either at their externship location or with one of our many partners in the healthcare field.
