Our first True Blue Alum of 2018 has played an integral role in her company for the last six years.
Janet Peabody, Class of 2012, has been working for New Millennium Medical—previously named Belvidere Family Chiropractic—for nearly six years. She began working as the Receptionist in March of 2012, the same month that she graduated from UMA's Medical Billing and Coding diploma program.
While working, Janet continued her education and earned her associate degree from UMA later that year in September. Janet has been with the practice through it all: from expanding their services, to changing practice management software, to rebranding the practice and moving from a 1,000-sqaure-foot office to a 3,000-square-foot office, and more.
"When I started it was just the two of us, the chiropractor and myself, running the office,” Janet says. “In early 2014, I was promoted to Office Manager and we started to grow. Soon after, I successfully assisted in converting the chiropractic office into a medical office with a current staff of eleven."
In the midst of the office growing, Janet jumped into the role as Office Manager so that they could bring the billing in-house. She now heads up the insurance department and manages all of the office's non-clinical staff.
One of her proudest moments at New Millennium Medical occurred when she recovered hundreds of thousands of dollars owed to the office through insurance claims. When the office added a new service, they began to have difficulty collecting payments from Medicare due to their switch in practice management software. Janet was able to work with Medicare to retrieve the money, which went into payroll for the staff and other office needs.
Not only does Janet enjoy her day-to-day tasks, but she also enjoys developing relationships with the local community. The office hosts many events to provide educational talks and give back to the residents of Belvidere. For Janet, the office’s sock drive for local homeless children was especially touching.
Janet remembers how hard her Career Services advisor worked to help find her the right job. After graduating, Janet thought going on interviews would be fine, but she didn't realize how much everything had changed since she originally began her career in banking—a job she held for 25 years before making the switch to the medical field as a Veterinarian Technician. After working with animals for 10 years, Janet decided she wanted to find an opportunity that was easier on her body, but where she could still be a part of the medical field.
"I used UMA for everything that they had available—and they're great. I have nothing but the greatest things to say about UMA." She continued, "Everyone was positive, everyone was supportive. It was the best experience that I've had."
Janet has the same dreams that she had when Dr. Parrett interviewed her in 2012. During her interview, he asked her where she saw herself in five years. Her response was, "Seeing your practice grow and helping you grow it." When asked today where she sees herself in five years, she says, "Right here."
We can't wait to check in with Janet in five years and see how she has continued to progress in her career. We’re so proud of her and everything she has accomplished, both professionally and within her community.
