Emergency Medical Technician Diploma Program
Program Overview
Help patients get the care they need when they need it. This hands-on training program allows Crisis Center of Tampa Bay employees hired into Behavioral Health Attendant and/or Driver positions to receive instruction, certification preparation, and clinical training to gain expertise in this growing field.1 This program includes a 20-hour hospital-based internship with 10 hours in the emergency room as well as more than five ride-along experiences with TransCare ambulance teams.
Emergency Medical Technician Training
Students will be prepared to initiate basic airway and respiratory intervention, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, bleeding control, wound care, to use the EMS communication system, and much more. Lecture and lab instruction occurs at UMA’s location in Tampa, and a clinical externship is conducted in various healthcare settings. Out-of-class work is required.
EMT Certification
Students in this program will receive course preparation to take the external National EMT Registry (NREMT) examination. Graduates must meet eligibility requirements to sit for the examination. Graduates must pass the NREMT examination to be eligible for certification and employment as an EMT.
Curriculum Outline
Program curriculum meets the most recent Emergency Medical Technician-Basic National Standard Curriculum requirements. The program includes two (2) hours of instruction on the trauma scorecard methodologies for assessment of adult trauma patients, pediatric trauma patients, and Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID) training.
