Higher Education Disability Laws
There are three federal statutes which oversee the provision of disability services in higher education. These statutes are civil rights laws that provide access to and prevent discrimination against individuals with disabilities.
Rehabilitation Act of 1973 Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 applies to any institution receiving federal financial aid.
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 The ADA requires that reasonable accommodations, which do not fundamentally alter the program requirements or standards, are to be provided to qualified individuals unless they cause an undue burden.
Title IX Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in all education programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance.
