Erica H.

Medical Administrative Assistant Program

December 29, 2017

Hello everyone! My name is Erica. I have been a stay at home mother of three wonderful boys most of my life. My youngest son was diagnosed with cancer when he was just a little over a year old (he is now four and cancer free!). When we were going through all the hospital stays, surgeries, tests, and chemotherapy it truly inspired me to go back to school in the medical field. I want to give back and be an inspiration to others that are unsure of what they want to do as far as schooling. I was 29-years-old when I finally decided what I wanted to do as a career, and being in the medical field is VERY rewarding to me. Everyone at UMA has been very inspiring and supportive of me which has helped keep me motivated throughout school. Once I graduated (with a 3.95 GPA – YAY!) in September of 2016, UMA continued to help me with finding employment. Unfortunately, on January 21st, 2017 my oldest son passed away tragically and I lost all hope and will to continue. UMA was very understanding with this unfortunate event that happened to me and was willing to work with me. They allowed me to have the time I needed to grieve and recoup. Once I was ready to go back to work, UMA was there to support me! My career advisor was dedicated to help find me a job that I would best fit. I am now working at a place I know well and with others that can understand what a rollercoaster ride I have been on over the past few years. The hospital that I work at now is also connected with St. Jude, who will always be apart of me and my kids lives. I could not be happier with the job that UMA helped me get! They are truly a blessing to me. Whenever you think you are not strong enough, smart enough, or just simply do not have the time to go back to school always remember that you CAN do it! The online courses are very detailed and informative and the teachers are always willing to help. There are many resources available to you from home through the online classrooms! Never give up! Fight for what you want – you will be surprised what you can do if you believe in yourself! I want to thank UMA for helping me make it through the hardest times in my life and never giving up on me. I am very glad I chose UMA for school!
