Our community giving focuses on three main areas served by nonprofit organizations that align with our values and mission to equip and empower students to excel in healthcare careers: Healthcare, Education and Diversity & Inclusion.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer
Walking in solidarity with students, faculty, staff and their loved ones who have personal experiences with the disease, UMA has raised more than $55,000 since 2013 for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk.
In 2018, UMA fielded one of the largest teams to Tampa’s 20th Making Strides and was recognized as having the third largest team in the nation.
Feeding Tampa Bay
In the Tampa Bay area, one in one in four children and one in seven adults struggle with hunger. For every dollar donated, Feeding Tampa Bay can provide 10 meals. Teams of UMA employees participate in food donation sorting, packing and have prepped thousands of pounds of food to help those who are food insecure.
Donating blood help save lives. UMA faculty and staff participate in a quarterly blood drives through OneBlood.org at our Online Campus in Tampa.
Many Tampa Bay area children participate in the school lunch program but lack access to nutritional meals on weekends. Since 2013 UMA has participated in the Pack-A-Snack program, which provides nutritional snacks for children to take home on the weekends, including fresh produce. UMA currently supports three local schools – Fairmont Park Elementary School and Melrose Elementary School in Pinellas County, and Sergeant Smith Middle School in Hillsborough County – by packing healthy snacks for food insecure students.
In 2017, UMA was recognized by The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office with an award for UMA’s multi-year involvement with Pack-A-Snack and Deputy Charity Arthur’s food pantry project at Sergeant Smith Middle School.
Big Brothers, Big Sisters
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay serves nearly 3,000 children and provides them and their mentors with the essential tools to develop lifelong, purposeful relationships. UMA began partnering with BBBS in 2018 to have faculty and staff serve as a Big Brother or Big Sister and is their fastest growing organizational partner in the area.
CASA (Community Action Stop Abuse)
CASA has been working in the Tampa Bay area since 1977 to provide for victims of domestic violence through refuge, crisis intervention, advocacy, professional training and community outreach. This organization helps to break the silence and enables victims to enjoy a life of hope, independence and peace. UMA supports CASA through event sponsorships and in partnership with our Clearwater Campus.
UMA regularly evaluates nonprofit community involvement sponsorship opportunities for philanthropic support and voluntary faculty and staff participation consistent with our mission and values.
